Information specific to the treatment of
single mothers by the authorities and the population in general
could not be found among the sources currently available to the
DIRB. However, please find attached an excerpt on Portugal from the
Report of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination
Against Women, submitted at the tenth session of the General
Assembly of the United Nations (United Nations 1992, 55-61).
Paragraph 298 of the report mentions that there were no specific
legal or other provisions for a single parent, and paragraph 295
discusses the social support structures available for children and
equality in work and employment (Ibid., 60). In addition,
please find attached several documents which provide information on
the situation of women in Portugal.
Additional information on this subject is
currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa.
