Information on the death of Dele Giwa, editor-in-chief of Newswatch, in October 1986 [NGA16868.E]

According to the Globe and Mail, Dele Giwa, a leading Nigerian journalist was killed on 19 October 1986 when a parcel-bomb delivered to his home exploded (20 Oct. 1986). The same source states that Dele Giwa was the editor-in-chief of Newswatch, "a hard-hitting investigative magazine" (ibid.). This information is corroborated by the 29 December 1986 issue of the New York Times. The sources state that two days before his death, Dele Giwa was summoned to the headquarters of the State Security Service (SSS). His colleagues noted that at the SSS he was accused, among other things, of plotting a socialist revolution in Nigeria.
