According to a representative of the
Consulate General of Israel in New York, a person who chooses to
renounce Israeli nationality can do so from a local consulate or
embassy of Israel (8 Nov. 1993). The person would have to fill out
a form and pay a fee (Ibid.). The representative added that a
person renouncing Israeli nationality must do so for his/her spouse
and children at the same time (Ibid.). Children over 18 can decide
for themselves while children between 16 and 18 must write a letter
stating whether or not they approve their parent's decision
(Ibid.). The request is sent to Israel for approval (Ibid.). A
demand for renouncing Israeli nationality can be refused if the
requester owes Israel any debts such as military service or unpaid
loans, or if the requester does not have another nationality and
would become stateless after renouncing Israeli nationality
(Ibid.).
This response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
