Information on a 12 August 1992 Kumasi demonstration by an opposition group that resulted in two casualties after the military intervened [GHA18088.E]

Information on this specific subject is unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa. However, DW Monitor Dienst Afrika produced by the Berne-based Office Fédérale des Réfugiés (ODR), states that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) held a meeting in Kumasi on 27 August 1992 which hundreds of people attended (20 Sept. 1992). The source did not elaborate. The DIRB is unable to corroborate this information at the present time. Other information indicates that demonstrations were held in November 1992 immediately after the Ghanaian presidential election (Reuters 6 Nov. 1992; Xinhua 6 Nov. 1992).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
