Nakabat Al Moalimin Party - Teacher's Union; its leader; when it became a party; whether it is active; and whether party members or their families are at risk from the government [TUN37682.E]

No reference to the Nakabat Al Moalimin Party could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

However, a June 1995 article reported that in February of that year, teachers had called a one-day strike following the breakdown of negotiations for higher wages and improved facilities (Political Risk Services June 1995). Responding to the strike action, the government arrested three of the teachers' trade union officials (ibid). As well, a 10 February 2001 article listed individuals who, according to the "Tunisian Ennahdha Islamic opposition (Zeitouna) web site," were "currently under siege" (BBC 10 Feb. 2001). Included on the list of 24 people are two members of the "secondary education union" and one member of the "teacher and union delegate" (ibid).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
