Information on the Khatib movement [LBN12012]

The word "Khatib" or "Al-Kata'eb," refers either to the Phalangist Party (or Phalanges libanaises) founded in 1936 by the late Pierre Gemayel (Europa 1991 1991, 1655; Day 1988, 333), or to the Phalangist Militia (or Lebanese Forces) set up in the 1970s to counterbalance the presence of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Lebanese soil (Degenhardt 1988, 211-212). With a membership of 100,000, the Phalangist Party, or Al-Kata'eb, is currently the largest Maronite party in Lebanon.
