Former Bishkek Deputy Mayor Arrested On Corruption Charges

The Kyrgyz Prosecutor-General's Office has announced that a former deputy mayor of Bishkek has been arrested on corruption charges.

Valery Kornienko, who worked as Bishkek deputy mayor in 2008-2010, has been placed in the detention center of the National Committee for State Security.

According to prosecutors, Kornienko's detention is related to the case against former Bishkek Mayor Nariman Tuleev.

Tuleev was arrested earlier this year for alleged corruption and financial mismanagement while in office.

Both Tuleev and Kornienko were removed from their posts on the wake of the violent antigovernment protests in April 2010 that toppled then-President Kurmanbek Bakiev.

Investigations into Kornienko are under way.
