Information about the Chinese community, particularly on their socio-economic status [GTM18019.E]

Information on the Chinese community in Guatemala is scarce and not up to date.

Guatemala has a very small commmunity of Chinese (AP 18 July 1993). According to data first published in 1982, there were 13,700 ethnic Chinese living Guatemala, compared to 3323 in 1955 (International Migration Review Fall 1990, 488, 496). This population established itself mainly in the capital and other urban areas (Buhrer and Levenson 1980, 144). Further information could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB in Ottawa.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find attached the list of additional sources consulted in researching this information request.
