According to an article published by the
Financial Times in October 1989, the Mohajir Quami Movement
(MQM) not only participated in but also arose from a mass rally in
Karachi in August 1986 (Lamb, 1989). The Far Eastern Economic
Review reported the arrest of the then opposition leader
Benazir Bhutto, the death of three of her supporters and the
wounding of many others during the crackdown on the rally by the
police (1986). The information currently available to the IRBDC
does not specifically mention where the rally took place in
Karachi.
2)
In October 1986, a Mohajir procession, on
its way to a rally in Hyderabad, passed through a predominantly
Pathan area of Sohrab on the outskirts of Karachi and a gunfight
broke out. According to the police, six people were shot dead and
at least 13 were injured in the clashes (Reuters, 31 October 1986;
1, 5 November 1986).
3)
According to an article published by The
Ottawa Citizen in July 1988, clashes erupted between Sindhis
and Mohajirs in Hyderabad on 17 July 1988. Although the article
does not mention where in Hyderabad the fighting took place, it
indicates that the town's mayor was wounded and a municipal
councillor was killed in the clashes (1988).
4)
Clashes erupted in Karachi's Orangi suburb
in November and December of 1986. In all the cases reported in the
articles available to the IRBDC, Mohajirs have been attacked by
Pashtuns (Reuters, 12 November 1986; The Globe and Mail,
1986; Tempest, 1986). The four-day rioting of December 14 was
described as the worst in decades, claiming at least 600 persons
killed or wounded (Tempest, 1986).
These reports cannot be corroborated with
further sources at this time by the IRBDC.
