ANGOLA: Twelve killed in rebel attack JOHANNESBURG, 29 June (IRIN) - UNITA rebels killed 12 people and injured 10 others in an attack on a supply convoy near the city of Malanje, east of the capital Luanda, state-controlled newspaper 'Jornal de Angola' reported on Friday. "The armed attack was made by soldiers of (UNITA leader Jonas) Savimbi against a convoy belonging to Gamek," the newspaper said. Gamek, owned by Brazilian construction company Odebrescht, has been building a billion-dollar dam on the Kwanza River at Capanda, east of Luanda. Eight of the 10 vehicles in the convoy belonged to Gamek. Rebels burned one vehicle and ransacked the rest in Tuesday's attack, the newspaper said. An undetermined number of people disappeared after the attack, it said, adding that according to witnesses the attackers burned six bodies at the scene. The report said this attack raised to 50 the number of people killed in the area, but it did not say when that count began. |
