The political position of Carlos Vega and whether he is or was a deputy in the National Assembly for the National Liberation Party (1998 to August 2000) [CRI35093.E]

No mention of a deputy of the National Liberation Party (Partido de Liberación Nacional, PLN) named Carlos Vega could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. However, a La Nación report mentions that Luis Carlos Vega Sigel was the president of the Alajuelan Democratic Action (Acción Democrática Alajuelense), a provincial party, in 1998 (n.d.).

A June 1996 La Nación reports that Carlos Vega was one of the former directors of the Central Bank (Banco Central) who was disqualified (inhabilitados) from any public posts following an influence peddling (tráfico de influencias) scandal (18 June 1996). The disqualifications of several bank directors and managers was one of the recommendations in a report from the PLN legislative commission on the Banco Anglo Costarricense (BAC) (ibid.).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
