Whether Colombian citizens are required to have their passports stamped upon exit from and entry into Colombia; if so, whether this requirement is enforced by Colombian authorities (January 2005 - August 2005) [COL100383.E]

In a telephone conversation with the Research Directorate on 17 August 2005, a consular official at the Embassy of Colombia in Ottawa stated that as a rule, and without exception, passports of Colombians as well as foreigners are always stamped upon entry into and exit from Colombia.

In addition, Canadian and United States (US) government Websites have indicated that Colombian citizens (including dual nationals) are required to show their Colombian passport both on arrival to and on departure from Colombia (Canada 17 Aug. 2005; US 5 Aug. 2005). A Colombian Government Website mentions that Colombians must have a valid passport to travel abroad (Colombia 8 Mar. 2005). However, none of the Websites indicate that passports are stamped on entry or exit.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim for refugee protection.
