Pakistan Hangs Man For Failed Attack On Musharraf

December 31, 2014

Pakistan has hanged a man convicted of attempting to assassinate former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in 2003.

The December 31 execution is the seventh since Pakistan ended a 2008 ban on capital punishment after an attack on a school earlier this month killed more than 150 people, most of them children.

A Pakistani official at Peshawar's Central Jail said Niaz Mohammad, 40, had been hanged and his body given to his relatives.

Mohammad had been convicted of involvement in a planned explosion as a Musharraf motorcade went over a bridge in Rawalpindi.

The blast missed the motorcade and no one was injured in the incident.

Of the seven people hanged in Pakistan this month, six were involved in the failed attempt to assassinate Musharraf.

International rights organizations have criticized Pakistani officials' plans to hang some 500 convicted criminals during the next several weeks.
