An official at the Office of the Embassy of Eritrea in Ottawa stated that an applicant for an Eritrean passport must present his or her national identity card in support of his or her application (16 Nov. 1999). Moreover, applicants for Eritrean passports are checked for criminal records before being issued a passport (ibid.). Those conditions also applied in 1994, according to the official (ibid.)
No information on whether applicants for Eritrean passports in 1994 were questioned about their political affiliations could be found within the time constraints of this Response. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Response.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
