Information on a detention facility in Apapa where relatives of the 22 April 1990 coup d'état attempt plotters were held [NGA13709]

An Amnesty International report on the detention of relatives of people suspected of involvement in the April 1990 coup d'état attempt, states that two sisters of the Great Ogboru, the businessman who is alleged to have financed the 22 April 1990 coup d'état attempt, "were held at the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) premises in Apapa, Lagos. The women were later transferred to Kiri Kiri Women's Prison, near Lagos, where conditions are known to be harsh" (8 Oct. 1991). Another report on the coup attempt also states that the DMI is located at Park Lane, Apapa (Newswatch 14 May 1992). Additional and/or corroborating information could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB in Ottawa. An earlier report by Amnesty International describes prison conditions in Nigeria as dismal, and further states there have been instances where prisoners have been killed in order to "decongest" prisons (Feb. 1989).
