Egypt's Supreme Court Reviews Recall of Parliament

Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court is due to convene to discuss the newly elected president's call to reconvene parliament.

The move by President Muhammad Morsi came despite the Supreme Constitutional Court's own ruling to dissolve the legislature.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, meanwhile, held an "emergency meeting" shortly after the announcement by the Islamist president.

The official Middle East News Agency said the generals met to "review and discuss the consequences" of the decision.

Last month, the then-ruling military generals dissolved the legislature after the Supreme Constitutional Court ruled that a third of its members had been elected illegally.

Analysts say the showdown between Morsi and the generals threatens to plunge the country into fresh instability, nearly 17 months after the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.
