Information on whether there is a regular ferry service across the Jaffna Lagoon, from Kilali to Pooneryn, and on who operates this service [LKA14641]

According to a representative of the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Ottawa, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) do not allow people to enter the Jaffna Peninsula via the land Elephant Passage (30 June 1993). They do this in order to operate an illegal income-generating night ferry service across the Jaffna Lagoon, from Kilali to Pooneryn (Ibid.). Reportedly, there are 10 ferry crossings every night (Ibid.).
Additional and/or corroborating information on the above subjects is currently unavailable to the DIRB.
