At Least 2 Killed In Beirut Blast

January 21, 2014

An explosion has hit the southern suburbs of Beirut, killing at least two people.

The area is a stronghold of the Lebanese Shi'ite movement Hizballah.

Lebanon's official news agency said the January 21 incident appeared to have been a suicide car bombing.

More than 20 people were injured.

Live footage showed the wreck of a car and a building on fire in the densely populated area.

Tensions among Lebanon's different sectarian sections have been rising as the conflict from neighboring Syria increasingly spills over into the country.

Hizballah is fighting in Syria on the side of President Bashar al-Assad's forces against mostly Sunni rebels.

The explosion occurred in an area where a car bomb earlier this month killed five people.
