IRB – Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (Autor)
According to Généalogie du
peuple Somali, the Awrtable (also Aurtable and Awartable) clan
traces its ancestry via the lineage of Yuusuf Daarood (n.d., 98),
or through the Wabaneya lineage of the Mijerteen branch of the
Darod (Daarood) (ibid., 102). This information on the ancestry of
the Awrtable was corroborated by a Somalia specialist on contract
to the United Nations Emergencies Unit for Ethiopia during a
personal interview in Toronto on 14 February 1996. Gilkes also
corroborates this information on the Darod ancestry of the Aurtable
in his genealogy charts, but he does not itemize subclans in the
Majerteen-Wabaneya lineage in those charts (Sept. 1994, n.p.).
Additional information on the Awrtable
beyond that already provided in Responses to Information Requests
SOM23305.E of 11 April 1996 and SOM20820.E of 12 June 1995 could
not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB. These
Responses are available at Regional Documentation Centres.
Please note that the spelling of Somali
place names and clan names is not consistent in the literature, and
that each of the spellings used in this Response reflect the
original spelling found in the cited sources.
This Response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of
additional sources consulted in researching this Information
Request.
