Activists Say Dozens Killed In Syrian Air Strike

July 11, 2015

Syrian activists say at least 28 people have been killed by a Syrian government air strike against the town of al-Bab, which is controlled by the Islamic State militant group.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in Great Britain, said on July 11 that among the dead were 19 civilians, including women and children. Scores of people were reportedly injured.

Witnesses say Syrian army helicopters dropped barrels stuffed with explosives on the town during the attack.

Al-Bab, about 40 kilometers northeast of Aleppo, is a frequent target of Syrian attacks. More than 50 people were killed in a similar attack on a market in the city in May.

Human rights organizations have criticized the Syrian government's use of the barrel bombs, saying they cause indiscriminate civilian casualties and damages.
