Kabul's Diplomatic Quarter Rocked By Blast

September 28, 2014

Abomb attached to a military vehicle has exploded in the diplomatic quarter of Kabul, one day before the inauguration of a new president was due to take place.

Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said a magnetic bomb was attached to the vehicle on the morning of September 28 and exploded in Zanbaq Square, near the presidential compound.

Danish said only the driver was injured and no one was killed.

Security has been tightened ahead of the September 29 inauguration ceremony for new President Ashraf Ghani, who is replacing long-time head of state Hamid Karzai.

International leaders and dignitaries have been invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

The Taliban have routinely attempted to launch attacks to disrupt such events and create an atmosphere of insecurity.
