UN Says Syria Death Toll Above 100,000

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says more than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war, up from nearly 93,000 just over a month ago.

Ban called on the Syrian government and opposition to halt the violence in the 28-month conflict, saying it is "imperative to have a peace conference in Geneva as soon as possible."

Ban spoke ahead of talks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who stood nearby.

The United States and Russia are attempting to convene an international conference in Geneva, along with the United Nations, to try to agree on a transitional government.

Meanwhile, in related news, a car bomb killed at least 10 people and injured 62 when it exploded on July 25 in the Jaramanah suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus.
