Ukraine Suspends Extradition For Suspect In Alleged Putin Plot

Ukrainian authorities have suspended the extradition to Russia of the main suspect in an alleged plot to assassinate President Vladimir Putin.

Officials said on August 21 that the decision to halt proceedings was made after the European Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, demanded that the extradition be suspended.

Ethnic Chechen suspect Adam Osmayev was detained in the Ukrainian city of Odesa in February after a handmade explosive device detonated in an apartment, killing one of his associates and injuring another.

Russian authorities have requested Osmayev's extradition, and last week, a court in Odesa upheld moves by Ukrainian prosecutors to extradite him.

Reports about the alleged plot surfaced days before Russia's March 4 presidential election, which resulted in Putin's winning an unprecedented third term as president.
