A reference to Senators' involvement or
participation in the "Iran-Contra scandal" could not be found among
the sources currently available to the IRBDC, except for their
participation as members of the hearing panel conducting the
congressional inquiry on the affair.
Please find attached a copy of a list (one
page) provided by the Information Service of the United States
Embassy in Ottawa, providing the names, party membership and State
of each member of the United States Senate's Select Committee on
Secret Military Assistance to Iran and the Nicaraguan
Opposition (commonly referred to as the "Senate's hearing panel
on the Iran-Contra affair"). According to this list, Senator
William L. Armstrong (Republican, Colorado) was not a member of the
Select Committee. Some press articles obtained through the IRBDC's
on-line news service report on some of Senator Armstrong's opinions
on the assistance for the Nicaraguan "contras", although no
reference to his involvement in the hearings could be found among
them. Please find attached a copy of the referred articles:
-"Hill approves nonmilitary Contra
aid; both houses reject expansion of plan", in The Washington
Post, 14 April 1989, p. A1;
Please find attached also a copy of a
summary of the proceedings and the findings of the congressional
inquiry, as reported in Keesing's Record of World Events,
(London, Longman Publishing Group), June 1987, pages 35182-35187
and April 1988, pages 35826-35829.
