For information on the above-mentioned
subject, please refer to the attached letter prepared by the
embassy of the United States and sent to the DIRB in Ottawa on 8
April 1994 as well as to the documents that the United States
Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) sent to the DIRB in
Ottawa on 15 April 1994.
According to an information officer of the
INS, the process to assess whether an applicant can reacquire
permanent resident status in the United States could take several
months (31 Mar. 1994). During this period, the applicant is not
entitled to exercise any right conferred to a citizen or a
permanent resident of the United States (ibid.).
For further information on the rights of
permanent residents in the United States, please refer to Response
to Information Request USA14251 of 26 May 1993.
This response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
