Treatment reserved for those promoting and involved in union activities in different organizations [URY3166]

Information on particular treatment of people involved in union activity could not be found among the sources currently available to the IRBDC. For a general view of recent union activity, please refer to Europa Year Book 1989, (London: Europa Publications, 1989), pp. 2895-2896, and Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 1988, (Washington: U.S. Department of State, 1989), pages 722-723, as well as the Critique: Review of the Department of State's Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 1988, (Washington: Human Rights Watch, July 1989), pages 203-206. The Europa Year Book 1989 (pp. 2895-2896) reports that union activity was repressed until 1985, when a elected civilian government replaced a military dictatorship. The Country Reports for 1988, on page 722, states that "workers are protected by law and practice against antiunion discrimination". The July 1989 Critique, page 203, states that in 1988 there was "general respect for labour rights" and reports an "absence of current human rights violations". Reports on the human rights situation in Uruguay since July 1989 could not be found among the sources currently available to the Documentation Centre.
