The Green Party of the Ukraine was founded
in October 1990 as the political wing of the environmental
organization Zeleniy Svit or Green World (Europa 1993
1993, 2889). The party's leader is Yuri Shcherbak (Political
Handbook of the World: 1992 1992, 795), while E. Korbetsky is
its chairman (Europa 1993 1993, 2889). By 1993 the party had
approximately 3,600 members. The Green Party is currently a member
of the New Ukrainian Alliance (Keesing's 1994, R126).
The party's platform calls for
privatization and decentralization of the economy, protection of
under privileged social classes, land reforms, entrenchment of
civil liberties, freedom of religion and protection of the
environment (Pravda Ukrainy 3 Oct. 1990). The party failed
to elect members to the Ukrainian parliament in elections held in
March 1994 (BBC Summary 31 Mar. 1994).
