Information on the forces in control of the North/west region and in particular the area of Hargeisa and Burao at the present time [SOM8313]

According to Africa Events, in the final days of January 1991, the Somali National Movement (SNM) captured the towns of Hargeisa, Berbera, Burao and Erigabo (March 1991). The densely populated residential areas of the cities of Hargeisa and Burao were previously bombarded by the government forces to flush out rebels and to punish civilians deemed sympathetic to them (Africa Events, February 1991).

Further information are currently unavailable to the IRBDC in Ottawa.
