According to Africa Events, in the
final days of January 1991, the Somali National Movement (SNM)
captured the towns of Hargeisa, Berbera, Burao and Erigabo (March
1991). The densely populated residential areas of the cities of
Hargeisa and Burao were previously bombarded by the government
forces to flush out rebels and to punish civilians deemed
sympathetic to them (Africa Events, February 1991).
