Information on the Darod clan, its founder and subclans including the Marehan, Majerteen and Ogadeni; on the sultan and sheik of each clan and subclan; and on the number of wives and children and their names [SOM14566]

According to A Modern History of Somalia: Nation and State in the Horn of Africa, the Darod clan traces its descent from a noble Arabian patriarch (1988, 24).

The Darod clan was allegedly founded by Sheik Darood, a Muslim saint who married a daughter of a local Somali patriach (Samatar 1987, 8). According to this sources, the Darod sub-clans trace their ancestry to Sheik Darod (Ibid). Information on sultans and sheiks of each subclan, and on the number of their wives and children, could not be found among the sources currently available to DIRB in Ottawa.

For information on the Majerteen, Marehan, and Ogadeni, please refer to the attached documents.
