For detailed information on former vice-president Ali Samatar, please see the attached bibliographic data contained in Who's Who in the Arab World 1990-1991 (1990, 503).

According to former Somali professor of African studies at the University of Florida at Gainsville who is now resident in Ottawa, Ali Samatar lives in exile in Italy (18 July 1994). The professor explained that although Ali Samatar was loyal to Siad Barre, as a member of the Midgan, one of the minority clans that are not part of the main Somali clan structure, he is not allied with any of the warlords and does not have political and/or military backing in Somalia (ibid.).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
