Information on a 1992 massacre of Yibir clan members in Mogadishu [SOM25807.E]

Information on a 1992 massacre of Yibir clan members in Mogadishu could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.

A researcher at the United States Institute for Peace in Washington, DC, stated that the Yibir are not a clan but a caste group (18 Dec. 1996). He explained that the Yibir and other minority groups such as the Midgan and Tumal "suffered greatly" in the Somali crisis because they are not allied with the major clan families and they do not have a power base (ibid.).

For additional information on the situation of the Yibir in Somalia, please refer to the numerous Responses to Information Requests on this topic available at Regional Documentation Centres.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
