Tehrik-e-Nafaz-Fiqh-e Jafaria (TNFJ) and Tehrik-e-Jafaria Pakistan (TJP) [PAK36271.E]

The following response is based on information given to the Research Directorate by the Secretary General of Tehrik-e-Jafaria Pakistan (TJP) in response to a request for information regarding the organizations Tehrik-e-Nafaz-Fiqh-e Jafaria (TNFJ) and TJP. Please note, various spellings of the word Tehrik are to be found, including Tehreek and Tehrek.

Background:

TJP was established in 1979 (6 June 2001). In 1995 the Central Council of TNFJ passed a resolution changing the name of the organization to TJP (ibid). Although, some individuals still persist in using the TNFJ identifier, TJP is now the official title of the organization (ibid). TJP, headed by Allama Syed Sajid Ali Naqvi, is the only organization representing the Shi'a Community in Pakistan (ibid).

The location of TPJ's head offices:

TPJ's head office is located at 71-C Satellite Town, Rawalpindi, Pakistan (8 May 2001).

The names and titles of the head office executive are as follows:

As of 8 May 2001, Allama Syed Sajid Ali Naqvi was TJP chief, Syed Razi-ud-Din Rizvi was the secretary general, and Ghulam Haider Haidry was the office secretary (8 May 2001).

The location of other TPJ offices:

TPJ offices are located in all provinces and districts including: Punjab and Sindh provinces; such districts as Blochistan and North West Frontier Province (NWFP) where there are large Shi'a communities; the Northern Areas; and Azad Jammu Kashmir (ibid).

Details regarding the issuance of TPJ membership cards:

No membership cards are issued by the TPJ. Instead, membership slips bearing the signature of the central secretary general are distributed (6 June 2001).

TPJ members participate in political, charitable and religious activities (6 June 2001).
