Daily Stop News Gujranwala

No information could be found on the Daily Stop News Gujranwala newspaper among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. A representative of the Daily Gujranwala Times, an online daily Urdu newspaper of Gujranwala (Daily Gujranwala Times 17 Mar. 2006), was not aware of a newspaper entitled Daily Stop News Gujranwala; however, the representative noted that there are many small newspapers in Pakistan that are not well-known (ibid. 14 Mar. 2006).

In a 15 March 2006 telephone interview with the Research Directorate, the media advisor to the Canada-Pakistan Business Council indicated that if the Daily Stop News Gujranwala existed, it was "not an important paper ... not even a B or C grade paper of Pakistan" (CPBC 15 Mar. 2006). The media advisor suggested it was likely a "fictitious" newspaper (ibid.).

A search of February 2005 issues of several online Pakistan newspapers (Daily Times; Dawn; Pakistan Times) produced no results with headlines similar to "Shiite Leader of Dhaukal's House besieged" or any articles about violent activities that had taken place in Wazirabad (Daily Times 22 Feb. 2005; ibid. 21 Feb. 2005; ibid. 20 Feb. 2005; Dawn 22 Feb. 2005; ibid. 21 Feb. 2005; ibid. 20 Feb. 2005; Pakistan Times 22 Feb. 2005; ibid. 21 Feb. 2005; ibid. 20 Feb. 2005).

Two online Pakistan newspapers, the Daily Times (21 Feb. 2005) and Dawn (21 Feb. 2005), did not have a 21 February 2005 edition of their newspaper in their archives. According to Dawn, which promotes itself as "Pakistan's most widely circulated English language newspaper," there was no Internet edition of the newspaper on 21 February 2005 "because of newspaper holidays in Pakistan" (Dawn 21 Feb. 2005).

According to 30 March 2004 correspondence sent to the Research Directorate from the Information Centre on Asylum and Migration of the German Federal Office for the Recognition of Foreign Refugees, in Pakistan, "[i]t is possible to either pay for or use private contacts to have a newspaper article published depicting a situation of persecution" (Germany 30 Mar. 2004).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim for refugee protection.
