The trouble in Kaduna State began in the
village of Zangon-Kataf because of a long-standing land dispute
between the predominantly Christian Kataf and Muslim Hausa ethnic
groups (The Washington Post 20 May 1992; The New York
Times 21 May 1992). The village clash stemmed specifically from
a dispute over the location of a new local market (The Christian
Science Monitor 28 May 1992; 30 July 1992). The fighting in
Kaduna city began after the bodies of the victims from the
Christian-Muslim clash in Zangon-Kataf were brought by the army to
Kaduna (The New York Times 21 May 1992; The Christian
Science Monitor 30 July 1992). On May 19 1992, the Nigerian
troops used armored cars, helicopters, tear gas and water cannon to
force most of the rioters off the streets of Kaduna (The New
York Times 21 May 1992). A dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed and
security forces, including soldiers in combat gear, arrested 250
people (Africa Research Bulletin 1-31 May 1992, 10588). At
least 250 people are reported to have been killed in clashes in
Kaduna State (Ibid.). A tribunal has been set up by the
government to try suspects arrested during the riot in Kaduna State
(Africa Research Bulletin 1-30 June 1992, 10620). This same
article reports that allegations of police complicity in the ethnic
disturbances in Kaduna State are being investigated
(Ibid.).
