Information on a Coordinadora Nacional del Movimiento Urbano Popular (CONAMUP), located in Mexico City [MEX27318.E]

Please find attached a 1990 document that describes the Coordinadora Nacional del Movimiento Urbano Popular (National Coordinating Committee of the Urban Popular Movement, CONAMUP) and the Movimiento Urbano Popular (MUP). More recent, passing references to the MUP in the City of Mexico are found in various news reports: for example, the Movimiento Urbano Popular reportedly was one of many groups that joined a round of street demonstrations called by trade unions on 20 November 1995 (La Jornada 21 Nov. 1995), and is also named as one among a group of organizations that conducted one of several street demonstrations that took place throughout Mexico City on 15 March 1996 (El Nacional 16 Mar. 1996).

Mexico City's directory assistance indicated that there is no registered telephone number for the MUP or the Coordinadora Nacional del Movimiento Urbano Popular (14 July 1997). The central office of the Partido de la Revolucion Democratica (PRD) in Mexico City indicated during a 14 July 1997 telephone interview that the MUP is a fairly well-known group that apparently has no links to a particular political party. The source was unable to locate a telephone number or an address for the group.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
