Current information on the Baath Party of Iraq and its relationship to the Baath Party of Syria [IRQ13385]

Attached please find the sections of The Europa World Year Book 1992 on the political situation of Iraq and Syria which also provide information on the Baath Parties of these countries and their current hostile relationship. Attached please also find Responses to Information Requests IRQ11585 of 28 August 1992 and IRQ12307 of 23 November 1992 on the Baath Party of Iraq and its pro-Syrian faction. The two attached sections of a book entitled Saddam's Iraq: Revolution or Reaction provide detailed information on the Baath Party of Iraq.
According to a representative of the Arab League in Ottawa, the Baath Parties of Iraq and Syria, which have long been rival parties in the Arab world, are still on bad terms (8 Apr. 1993).
A representative of Middle East Watch in New York corroborates the above statement and adds that Syria's membership in the anti-Iraqi coalition during the Persian Gulf War further worsened the unfriendly relationship between the two parties (8 Apr. 1993). There has not been any improvement in their bilateral relations since the end of the war (Ibid.).
Additional information on the above subject is currently unavailable to the DIRB.
