Information on the Hungarian asylum system (procedures) [HUN15195.E]

Please find attached documents from the UNHCR REFLEG database dealing with the constitutional guarantees for refugees, the minister/ministry in charge of refugee affairs, the rights and obligations of refugees, the duty of refugee reception centres, and the procedures for obtaining refugee status in Hungary.

According to the consul of the Hungarian Embassy in Ottawa, to his recollection, there have not been any changes to the legislation and directives (5 Oct. 1993). The consul explained that Hungary also adheres to geographical limitations in granting refugee status to applicants (that is, Hungary grants refugee status only to Europeans) (Ibid.).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
