Information on the status of the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional (MLN) party after the 1990 general elections [GTM11719]

Please find attached several documents that provide information on the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional (MLN) party since late-1990. The following summarizes some of the information found in the attached documents (listed below).

The MLN participated in the general (congressional and presidential) elections of November 1990 as part of a coalition with the Frente de Avanzada Nacional (FAN), with Colonel Luis Ernesto Sosa as the coalition's presidential candidate and David Eskenassy running for vice-president. The MLN won four seats in congress as part of the MLN-FAN coalition, but lost the first round of the presidential election. The MLN later endorsed Jorge Serrano Elías for the January 1991 runoff presidential election between Serrano and Jorge Carpio Nicolle.

On 22 January, the MLN coalition was reportedly assigned to head the congressional commissions on technology and sports. Nevertheless, the source that reports this last information refers to "the coalition of the National Liberation Movement and the Institutional Democratic Party" (Central America Report 25 Jan. 1991, 22). It is not clear which of the parties is mistakenly named, since both form part of different coalitions. The Institutional Democratic Party (PID) has been part of a three-party coalition that also supported Jorge Serrano in the run-off presidential election.

A June 1991 report states that Mario Sandoval Alarcón, who continued to be the MLN leader, was sceptical regarding the dialogue between the government and the guerrillas (Inter Press Service 18 June 1991).

Additional and/or corroborating information on the requested subject could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.
