Information on student demonstrations at the University of Science and Technology between 1985 and 1986. [GHA6707]

Anti-government demonstrations took place at the University of Science and Technology (also known as the University of Kumasi) and at the University of Legon in 1985. The students were protesting the drastic financial measures taken by the PNDC's Ministry of Finance in implementing the Economic Recovery Program (Intercontinental Press 114).

Demonstrations were also reported at the UST on 20 March 1987, resulting in the closure of the University following "acts of hooliganism and the harassment, threatening and molestation of innocent people during demonstrations" in protest of educational reforms anticipated in the academic year 1988 (FBIS, 20 March 1987).
