Information on the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party (EPRP) and its relationship with the newly-formed government [ETH10272]

During a telephone interview with the IRBDC (29 Feb. 1992), an Immigration Counsellor with the Ethiopian Community Centre in Washington, D.C., stated that the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party (EPRP), which regroups Ethiopians from different ethnic groups, is a member of the US-based Coalition of Democratic Forces (COEDF) and that it operates both inside and outside Ethiopia. According to this source, the EPRP mainly operates in Gojjam in the north western part of Ethiopia. The Immigration counsellor stated that the relationship between the current government of the Ethiopian People's Democratic Revolutionary Front (EPDRF) and the EPRP is conflictual. The EPRP and the EPDRF are divided over the division of Ethiopia along ethnic lines and also over the question of Eritrea (Ibid.). Although the the EPRP recognizes Eritrea's right to self-determination, it is reportedly opposed to its independence while the EPRDF actively supports Eritrea's independence
(Africa Confidential 14 June 1991, 3). A national conference on the future of Ethiopia organized by the EPDRF was held in Addis Ababa from 1 to 5 June 1991 but the EPRP and the COEDF were among the groups that were not invited (Africa Confidential 12 July 1991, 1). Further information on this subject is currently unavailable to the IRBDC in Ottawa.
