Bomb Kills Senior Pakistani Officers Amid Push For Talks

 September 15, 2013
A roadside bomb in northwestern Pakistan has killed two senior military officials.

A statement from Pakistan’s military confirmed that Major General Sanaullah and Lieutenant Colonel Touseef were traveling to visit troop posts near the border with Afghanistan in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province when an improvised explosive device exploded on the roadside.

The blast also killed an enlisted Pakistani soldier.

The attack came as Pakistan’s government is trying to launch peace talks with Pakistan’s Taliban.

Pakistan’s Taliban on September 15 demanded that the government in Islamabad release militant prisoners and begin withdrawing troops from Pakistan’s tribal areas as a precondition for their participation in peace talks.
