Two sources consulted by the Research Directorate stated that there is a national registry of the names and addresses of all of the teachers and education professionals who were or who currently are working (NUT 23 Dec. 2011; Nigeria 21 Dec. 2011). This registry is managed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) (ibid.). The TRCN is the state organization whose mandate is to regulate the teaching profession in Nigeria (Nigeria n.d.).

During a telephone interview with the Research Directorate on 10 May 2012, a TRCN administrative officer explained that education professionals are required to register in order to teach in Nigeria. In addition, on the TRCN Internet site, it is explained that any person who works officially and legally in the teaching profession and those who work with education authorities in Nigeria must register (Nigeria n.d.).

According to the TRCN administrative officer, the registry of education professionals includes the names and addresses of members and information about their diplomas and additional qualifications (Nigeria 10 May 2012). This registry is updated when the address of a current member is changed (NUT 23 Dec. 2011; Nigeria 10 May 2012). The TRCN administrative officer stated that it is the responsibility of a member to communicate the change of address to one of the TRCN offices, before or after the move (ibid.). This officer stated that, furthermore, the TRCN office updates the address of former members as long as these members renew their licence (ibid.).

During a telephone interview with the Research Directorate on December 21, 2011, a TRCN senior administrative officer explained that access to the registry is reserved for the director of the TRCN registration service or for any other member of personnel authorized by that person. To protect the information of its members, the TRCN saves it on electronic files accessible to the authorized members of personnel by a personal password. (Nigeria 10 May 2012).
