Man Sentenced On Terrorism Charges In Tatarstan

The Supreme Court of Russia's Republic of Tatarstan has sentenced a man to 9 1/2 years in jail on terrorism charges.

Taufik Baibekov, 23, was found guilty on September 26 of planning terrorist attacks in Tatarstan.

Baibekov had pleaded guilty.

He was arrested in August 2012 after explosives accidentally detonated in a car, killing four men in the Tatar capital, Kazan.

The blast occurred while the homemade explosives were being transported by Baibekov's acquaintances.

The incident took place only weeks after Islamic radicals attacked two top Tatar clerics, severely injuring Mufti Ildus Faizov and shooting dead his former deputy, Valiulla Yakupov.

On September 25, a court in Kazan sentenced the imam of a disbanded mosque in the city to two years in jail for spreading extremist ideas.
