IRB – Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (Author)
According to the Buenos Aires newspaper La Nación, the helicopter in which Carlos Menem Junior was travelling crashed on 15 March 1995 "just opposite" (justo en frente) to an Esso service station located in Ramallo, Buenos Aires (6 Aug. 1997; ibid. 24 Aug. 1997). This information is corroborated by Cristian Sanz, journalist and author of a book examining the circumstances of Menem's death, who claimed that the helicopter carrying the son of the Argentinean president crashed in a field "opposite to" (frente al) an Esso service station located at kilometre 211.5 on National Route 9 (Editorial E-Libro.Net n.d.; La Gaceta 31 July 2000).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
