IRB – Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (Author)
In addition to the information available
through your Regional Documentation Centre, the Movimiento de
Democracia Popular (MDP) is mentioned briefly in the 29 July 1993
issue of Latin American Regional Reports: Andean Group. The
report describes the MDP's leader, Gabriel Puerta Aponte, as "the
latest arrival" in the presidential race that took place later that
year. Another report states that Gabriel Puerta Aponte obtained
3,746 votes or 0.06 per cent of total votes cast in the
presidential election (BBC Summary 13 Dec. 1993).
This response was prepared after
researching publicly accessible information currently available to
the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does
not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular
claim to refugee status or asylum.
