Eight Suspected Terrorists Go On Trial In Kazakhstan
May 21, 2013
Eight local men have gone on trial in Kazakhstan's western city of Atyrau on terrorism charges.
The trial started on May 21 and is being held behind closed doors.
The suspects are charged with terrorism, the illegal possession and distribution of weapons and explosives, as well as kidnapping, murder, car theft, and burglary.
The suspects were arrested in Atyrau between December and January.
Atyrau and other cities and towns in western Kazakhstan have made headlines in recent months following security operations in the region targeting Islamic extremists and terrorists.
Last fall, security forces and police killed nine suspected militants in two separate operations in Atyrau and the nearby town of Kulsary.
