On 13 September 2022, Mahsa Amini was arrested by the Guidance Patrol (Gasht-e-Ershad) on charges of not properly wearing the hijab. She was reportedly beaten while in police custody and hospitalized. Her death on 16 September 2022 sparked nationwide protests.
