“This site first went online as Defenselink in October 1994, and began as a cooperative effort between the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs) and the Defense Technical Information Center. Its initial purpose was to simply publish and distribute, in electronic form, DoD news releases. Since that time, the mission of Defense.gov has expanded as more information has been published on-line that is of interest to the general public and other specific audiences.”
