Damaskus – Deir ez Zor Stadt

Mehrere lokale Nachrichtenmedien veröffentlichten in den Vergangenen neun Monaten Artikel über die Gefahren der Befahrung der Straße von Damaskus nach Deir ez Zor (Enab Baladi, 18. Mai 2025; Ultra Syria, 8. Juni 2025; Tafaseel Press, 10. Juli 2025; Syria 24, 6. August 2025; Al-Thawra As-Syria, 14. Jänner 2026; Naher Media, 16. Jänner 2026). Die Situation vor Ort wird von der staatlichen syrischen Medienplattform Al-Thawra As-Syria im Jänner 2026 wie folgt zusammengefasst:

Es handle sich bei der Straße von Damaskus nach Deir ez Zor um die gefährlichste Straße des Landes. In den vergangenen Jahren habe die Anzahl der Verkehrsunfälle auf der Straße dramatisch zugenommen. Dutzende Zivilist·innen seien ums Leben gekommen und Hunderte seien verletzt worden. Laut Ahmed Khalil, dem Leiter des Zivilschutzteams im Zentrum von Palmyra (auch Tadmur genannt, eine Stadt auf halbem Weg zwischen Damaskus und Deir ez Zor Stadt, Anmerkung ACCORD), seien allein im Dezember sechs Verkehrsunfälle auf den Strecken Palmyra-Deir ez Zor und Palmyra-Homs registriert worden, die innerhalb eines Monats zu etwa zehn Todesfällen und 15 Verletzten geführt hätten. Die Straße sei aufgrund der hohen Unfallzahlen als „Todesstraße“ bekannt. Sie durchquere weite Teile der syrischen Wüste und sei größtenteils einspurig und nicht breiter als sechs Meter. Sie befinde sich in einem stark verfallenen Zustand und es würden grundlegende Verkehrssicherheitseinrichtungen wie Schilder und Warnhinweise fehlen. Darüber hinaus gebe es keine Erste-Hilfe-Stationen, keine Kommunikationsnetze, um Hilfe oder Krankenwagen zu rufen, und keine Straßenbeleuchtung. Die Bewohner·innen von Deir ez Zor hätten keinen alternativen Weg nach Damaskus, Homs und in andere Gebiete zu gelangen. Laut einem LKW-Fahrer habe die Anzahl der Unfälle deutlich zugenommen, da vermehrt junge Männer – denen das Reisen in den vergangenen Jahren nicht möglich war – nach Damaskus reisen würden, deren Fahrkenntnisse für die Straße nicht ausreichen würden. Die meisten hätten keinen Führerschein. Dazu würden Taxis kommen, deren Fahrzeuge nicht für die Art der Straße gemacht sei und die Autos anderer Transportunternehmen seien oft veraltet und in schlechtem Zustand. Bei widrigen Wetterbedingungen, Unfällen oder der Notwendigkeit einer Reparatur unterwegs, müssten Fahrgäste oder Unfallopfer stundenlang in der Wüste warten. Hierbei stelle die Unterbrechung des Kommunikationsnetzes auf weiten Streckenabschnitten ein spezielles Problem dar (Al-Thawra As-Syria, 14. Jänner 2026; siehe auch: Enab Baladi, 18. Mai 2025; Ultra Syria, 8. Juni 2025; Tafaseel Press, 10. Juli 2025; Syria 24, 6. August 2025; Naher Media, 16. Jänner 2026).

North Press Agency (NPA) meldet im Oktober 2025, dass auf der genannten Straße eine Person durch eine Landmine in einem Fahrzeug getötet worden sei. Zwei weitere seien verletzt worden (NPA, 29. Oktober 2025). Hawar News Agency (ANHA) berichtet Ende Dezember 2025 von einem Verkehrsunfall auf der Straße von Damaskus nach Deir ez Zor, wobei drei Menschen ums Leben gekommen und acht weitere verletzt worden seien, zwei davon schwer (ANHA, 30. Dezember 2025). Laut Deir Ezzor 24 seien Mitte Jänner 2026 mehrere Zivilist·innen ebenfalls bei einem Verkehrsunfall auf der Strecke mit unterschiedlichem Schweregrad verletzt worden (Deir Ezzor 24, 17. Jänner 2026).

Kurdistan 24 berichtet im Dezember 2025, dass eine gemeinsame Patrouille syrischer Sicherheitskräfte und US-amerikanischer Militärangehöriger nahe der Stadt Palymra unter Beschuss geraten seien. Die Straße zwischen Deir ez Zor und Damaskus sei in weiterer Folge vorübergehend gesperrt worden (Kurdistan 24., 13. Dezember 2025; siehe auch: SOHR, 13. Dezember 2025). Kurdistan 24 erklärt, dass Palmyra in der Vergangenheit ein Brennpunkt extremistischer Aktivitäten gewesen sei und trotz der Kontrolle der Übergangsregierung Sicherheitsrisiken bestünden. Allgemein sei die Sicherheitslage in den Regionen um Homs und Deir ez Zor weiterhin fragil und es komme immer wieder zu Angriffen auf militärische und zivile Ziele (Kurdistan 24, 13. Dezember 2025). Ein Reporter von France 24, der im Sommer 2025 durch Syrien gereist war, beschreibt die Straße als „tückisch“. Kämpfer des Islamischen Staates seien in dieser Region weiterhin aktiv (France 24, 11. Juli 2025).

Türkische Grenze – Deir ez Zor Stadt

Türkiye Today nennt in einem Artikel vom Dezember 2025 sechs offene Grenzübergänge zwischen der Türkei und Syrien: Kasab, Bab Al-Hawa, Al-Hamam, Al-Salam, Al-Rai und Dscharabulus (Türkiye Today, 31. Dezember 2025; siehe auch: Enab Baladi, 19. August 2025).

Es konnten im Rahmen der Recherche keine spezifischen Informationen zu den Straßen zwischen der türkischen Grenze und Deir ez Zor Stadt gefunden werden. Gesucht wurde auf Arabisch, Deutsch und Englisch mittels ecoi.net, Factiva und Google nach einer Kombination aus folgenden Suchbegriffen: Syrien, Straße, Autobahn, Türkei, Grenze, Deir ez Zor Stadt, Probleme, Angriffe, Gefahr, Situation, Fahrt.

Bitte beachten Sie, dass es während der Recherchezeit zu einer Änderung der Kontrollsituation im betreffenden Gebiet gekommen ist und die Konsequenzen dieser Veränderung auf die Sicherheitslage der Straßen nicht ermittelt werden konnte:

Al Jazeera meldet am 9. Jänner 2026 auf ihrer Facebook-Seite, dass die Straße zwischen Raqqa und Deir ez Zor in Folge der Kämpfe zwischen Regierungstruppen und den Syrischen Demokratischen Kräften (SDF) gesperrt sei (Al Jazeera Channel, 9. Jänner 2026).

Das syrische Pressezentrum meldet in einem Facebook-Beitrag vom 18. Jänner 2026, dass die Autobahn zwischen Deir ez Zor, Raqqa und Aleppo zum ersten Mal vollständig unter der Kontrolle des syrischen Militärs stünde (Syrisches Pressezentrum, 18. Jänner 2026).

The National berichtet am selben Tag, dass gesamt Deir Ez Zor sowie viele Teile der Provinz Raqqa nach einer Blitzoffensive sowie vereinbartem Waffenstillstand unter Kontrolle der Übergangsregierung stehen würden (The National, 18. Jänner 2026; siehe auch: Al Jazeera, 19. Jänner 2026). Laut Al Jazeera hätten die SDF zugestimmt, die Provinzen Deir ez Zor und Raqqa zu verlassen (Al Jazeera, 18. Jänner 2026; siehe auch: Al Jazeera, 19. Jänner 2026).

Irakische Grenzen (Al-Bukamal) – Deir ez Zor Stadt

Enab Baladi berichtet im Dezember 2025, dass der Irak und Syrien durch drei offizielle Grenzübergänge verbunden seien: den Grenzübergang al-Yarubiyah (auf irakischer Seite Rabia genannt) in der Provinz al-Hasaka (Nordostsyrien), den Grenzübergang Al-Bukamal (auch Abu Kamal genannt, Anmerkung ACCORD) in der Provinz Deir ez Zor (Ostsyrien), auf irakischer Seite al-Qaem genannt, sowie den Grenzübergang al-Tanf gegenüber von al-Waleed (Enab Baladi, 5. Dezember 2025). Der Grenzübergang Al-Bukamal sei seit Juni 2025 wieder für Personen- und LKW-Verkehr geöffnet (Enab Baladi, 5. Dezember 2025; siehe auch: Reuters, 14. Juni 2025).

Syria TV teilt im November 2025 einen journalistischen Videobeitrag auf seinem YouTube-Kanal, in dem über den schlechten Zustand der Straße von Al-Bukamal nach Deir ez Zor Stadt gesprochen wird. Die Straße sei gefährlich zu befahren, es gebe viele Schlaglöcher und man komme nur sehr langsam voran (Syria TV, November 2025).

Die Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) berichtet im Dezember 2025, dass eine bewaffnete Gruppe einen Bus angegriffen habe, der Wachleute der Ölanlagen des Energieministeriums auf der Straße nach Deir ez Zor transportiert habe (SANA, 30. Dezember 2025).

Es konnten im Rahmen der Recherche keine weiteren Informationen über die Sicherheitslage auf der Straße gefunden werden. Die folgenden Quellen beschreiben Sicherheitsbedenken in der Stadt Al-Bukamal:

NPA schreibt in einem Artikel vom Juni 2025, dass Al-Bukamal seit langem als strategisches Zentrum für Drogen- und Waffenschmuggel diene (NPA, 4. Juni 2025).

Die Syrische Beobachtungsstelle für Menschenrechte (Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, SOHR) berichtet im November 2025, dass Unbekannte Pro-IS Parolen an die Wand einer Schule geschrieben hätten. Die Aktivitäten des IS hätten laut SOHR in der Provinz Deir ez Zor zugenommen, unter anderem auch Angriffe auf Zivilist·innen (SOHR, 22. November 2025).

Ende Dezember 2025 sei laut SANA ein Sicherheitsbeamter bei einem Sprengstoffanschlag in der Stadt Al-Bukamal schwer verletzt worden sei (SANA, 30. Dezember 2025).

„Stretching over 200 kilometers through the heart of the Syrian desert, the Deir Ezzor-Palmyra road has turned into a nightmare for travelers due to its poor condition and the disruption of internet connectivity along its route.

This vital artery connecting two ancient governorates (Deir Ezzor and Homs), which was once a symbol of communication and trade, has become, for years now, the ‘road of death’ that lurks ominously for travelers, claiming their lives in accidents that occur almost daily.

The road is narrow, barely accommodating one vehicle in each direction, making it a constant site for hazardous encounters between cars and trucks. Attempts to overtake are fraught with danger, and the potholes scattered along the road create a catastrophic traffic environment.

Isolation in the heart of the desert

The disruption of communication adds to the suffering of travelers on the Deir Ezzor-Palmyra road, a problem that is no less grave and significant than the narrowness of the roads. The near-total lack of cellular communication networks isolates travelers as soon as they venture away from the two cities.

According to travelers interviewed by Enab Baladi, on the road one cannot communicate with their loved ones to reassure them, nor can they call for help in case of an emergency, whether it be a breakdown of their vehicle or any accident.

This disruption increases the travelers’ feelings of impotence and loneliness in case of any misfortune, with questions arising like what if the car breaks down in the middle of the desert, or what if the bus has an accident?

The road connects from Deir Ezzor to Palmyra and then to Damascus, and has witnessed repeated accidents recently. Six civilians died, including four who were on a passenger bus and two in a truck loaded with sheep, following a traffic accident that occurred near the village of al-Shoula on the Deir Ezzor-Palmyra road, due to a direct collision between the bus and the truck on May 10.

The accident also resulted in the death of about 20 sheep and significant material damage to both vehicles, according to the Syria Civil Defence.

The Civil Defence mentioned that emergency and rescue teams responded to the accident, in cooperation with the ambulance system in Deir Ezzor city, where the bodies were transferred to the national hospital for delivery to the victims’ families.

Engineer Ahmed al-Ali, a resident of Deir Ezzor, considered that the current state of the road represents a real burden on the locals. The narrowness of the road and its inability to handle the increasing traffic makes it a hotspot for unfortunate accidents that claim innocent lives.
