Information on where the Leelkase live, on their clan affiliation, and on current conditions in their area [SOM23328.E]

Specific information on the Leelkase is limited to that provided by genealogical tables among the sources consulted by the DIRB. According to these sources, the Lelkasse (spelling varies among the sources) are a Darod subclan (Gilkes Sept. 1994, n.p.), descendants of the Tanade (Somalia: Background Brief Oct. 1995, 71; Généalogie du Peuple Somali n.d., 98). Généalogie du Peuple Somali indicates two family lines are derived from the Tanade: the Her and the Malismoge (ibid.). Somalia: Background Brief indicates that the Lelkasse descend directly from the Tanade with no intervening generations (Oct. 1995, 71).

Current information on where the Lelkasse reside could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB. However, for general information on the conditions in the areas of Lelkasse residence identified in Response to Information Request SOM17572.E of 6 June 1994, please consult the attachments which provide information on the Mudug region. In addition to these attachments, general comments on the situation in the north east region of Somalia, which includes the Mudug region, can be found in Transcript of a Conference on Somalia, which is available at Regional Documentation Centres. This document records the observations of a former Somali ambassador, who was also a United Nations envoy to Somalia during the UN intervention in that country.

For information on the Kismayo area, please consult Response to Information Request SOM22640.E of 7 March 1996, and for information on the Gedo area, please consult Response to Information Request SOM23029.E of 7 March 1996, both of which are available at Regional Documentation Centres.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
